Luke Giovanine has become the first male recipient of the John R. Cervantes Memorial Scholarship. Luke will attend Valparaiso University’s engineering program in the fall.

The winner of the 2014 John R. Cervantes Memorial Scholarship is Moline High School senior Hannah Wright. Hannah will be attending John’s alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, this fall. She will be eligible to receive $1,000 each year she attends college, up to $4,000 in total aid. Over the past weekend, Hannah was part of a special ceremony honoring scholarship winners at the Butterworth Center in Moline, and was presented with her award by the Mary Little Deere – Fort Armstrong chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Last Saturday at the historic Butterworth Center in the Overlook District of Moline, IL, the Mary Little Deere-Fort Armstrong branch of the Daugthers of the American Revolution presented scholarships to Becky Lankford and Kylie Romeo on behalf of the John R. Cervantes Memorial Scholarship Fund. Becky is this year’s winner of the award and was receiving funds for use toward her freshman year of college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Kylie was the 2012 winner and was renewing her scholarship award for her sophomore year at Luther College in Iowa.

Marylou Witherspoon, niece of John Cervantes, was in attendance at the award ceremony.

The 2013 winner of the John R. Cervantes Memorial Scholarship Fund is Moline High School graduate Becky Lankford. Becky is an Illinois State Scholar award winner, three-sport athlete in basketball, softball, and cross-country, and graduated #1 in her class with a 4.0 GPA. This fall, she will be attending the the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She becomes the first winner of the Cervantes scholarship to attend the namesake’s alma mater. She will receive $1,000 each year she attends college, up to four years total.

The 2012 winner of the John R. Cervantes Memorial Scholarship Fund is Moline High School graduate Kylie Romeo. Kylie will receive a $1,000 award each year she attends college, up to four years total. This fall, she will be attending Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where she plans to major in biology.

Zina Ellis was awarded the 2011 John R. Cervantes Memorial Scholarship at Moline High School’s convocation on Monday, May 16. She will be attending Yale University in the fall.

Madison Logan, daughter of Tim and Terry Logan, was awarded the $1,000 John R. “Jack” Cervantes Memorial Scholarship at the 2010 Moline High School Convocation on May 17. The award was presented by Pat Staley, regent of the Mary Little Deere-Fort Armstrong Chapter of NSDAR. Madison received a personalized plaque commemorating the occasion. She will also have her name etched into the perpetual plaque hanging in the hall at Moline High School.

Karin Scott, inaugural recipient of the John R. Cervantes Scholarship

Moline High School Class of 2009 Salutatorian Karin Scott, daughter of Thomas and Theresa Scott,┬áhas been awarded the inaugural John R. “Jack” Cervantes Memorial Scholarship. Karin, who is also an Illinois State Scholar and winner of the Good Citizen Award presented by the Little Mary Deere-Fort Armstrong Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, received a $1,000 check to go toward her college tuition. Karin plans to attend Northwestern University this fall and major in history and economics.
